Thierry Henry explains message behind final goal celebration at Highbury amid Barcelona speculation

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has revealed the sentiment behind his famous goal celebration in his final match at Highbury.

The Frenchman kissed the ground after converting a penalty against Wigan Athletic.

With speculation swirling around Henry's future, many felt that was his way of saying goodbye to the club amid a move to Barcelona.

However, Henry has explained that his celebration was to say goodbye to Highbury, a ground he holds close to his heart, and wasn't an admission he was about to join Barcelona.

"It's difficult to put into words what Highbury represented to me or Arsenal fans," Henry told Sky Sports' The Football Show.

"I kissed the ground for a reason, everyone thought I was going to leave Arsenal and go to Barcelona, that's why I kissed the grounds. That wasn't true, I did it because I knew it was over, I was never going to play in my garden again.

"I was never going to see that grass early in the morning when we had a meeting at 11am. I used to say to the field 'I'll see you later my man'. I have great memories there, bad memories although they were more good memories.

"Everyone loved to play at Highbury, it's very difficult. I never went to see it, the plaque, I refuse to go, it's too hard for me to see it like that. I've played in bigger stadiums, more beautiful stadiums in terms of how it's built but Highbury is Highbury, nothing can compete with it for me."

"That stadium had a heart for me," he added.

"It's a weird one for me to explain. I felt alive when I was there and that stadium felt alive for me."
