Thief who stole cash, goods worth Rs 1 crore held

JAIPUR: Kotwali police arrested a 33-year-old thief from a train in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, who had stolen cash and other items worth over Rs1 crore from showrooms and shops.

DCP North, Paris Deshmukh told TOI that a special team was constituted when cops learnt about the accused’s whereabouts. SHO Vikram Singh said that the accused, Mohammad Rajjak, is a native of the Katihar district in Bihar. But he had married a woman from Bangladesh and took the citizenship of his wife’s native country. Police said the accused was arrested before he could flee to Bangladesh. “We had learnt through our intelligence sources that Rajjak was travelling in a Kolkata-bound train before leaving for Bangladesh. But we spoke to railway police officials and detained him from the train in Kanpur itself,” Singh said.

Kotwali police said that accused had recently decamped with cash and gold coins from a showroom in Manak Chowk four months ago, in 2019 he fled with Rs 12 lakh after breaking into a showroom. “He has two wives, one in Bihar and another in Bangladesh,” said an official.

City police filed a case against the unnamed accused and scanned CCTV footage following which it became clear that it was the handiwork of Rajjak who had staged similar thefts across multiple police station areas of Jaipur.
