Thief steals over £1,000 worth of shopping from car parked in city centre

Over £1,000 worth of clothes has been robbed from a car parked in Glasgow's city centre.

Police are investigating the theft which happened around 5pm on Sunday while the owners were visiting a nearby restaurant on George Street.

The Mercedes car was parked outside Sainbury's while the couple ate at Yippon Kitchen.

CCTV from the shop shows a suspect standing outside before opening the boot of the car, removing the contents and walking off.

The owner has told Glasgow Live that over £1,000 worth of goods were inside including Gucci shoes worth over £500, a Gucci belt worth £375, a Nike tracksuit worth £150 and Zara clothes totalling over £150.

As well as checking that the car was locked before heading to the restaurant, the vehicle would've automatically locked after ten minutes.

The couple are now convinced that they were targeted by a criminal using a high-tech device.

They added: "CCTV shows that the person responsible had been roaming the Sainsbury's aisles prior to the robbery happening. They then stand outside for a further 10 minutes before opening the boot of our car at 4.50pm, picking the bags up, putting them over his shoulder, then closing the boot by hand and walking away.

"We're adamant that the man has used a high-tech device to secure himself onto our car locking system, for him to have got access to the boot.

"I am raging that this has happened to me. Never leave anything valuable in the car."

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to contact police.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "We were called around 5.50pm on Sunday, November 1, to a report of a theft from a car in George Street, Glasgow. Enquiries are ongoing."
