Thief refuses help for drug addiction and asks to be sent to prison instead

A man who stole from shops in Coatbridge asked to be sent to jail instead of undertaking a drug treatment and testing order.

Light-fingered Philip Doyle, who now lives in Bellshill, made off with items from Spar, Tesco, Poundland and the Tesco superstore in Airdrie earlier this year.

Items stolen included groceries, batteries and toiletries.

The 43-year-old appeared in the dock at Airdrie Sheriff Court last week where his defence solicitor Roberto Manini said his client has no confidence in his own behaviour.

Mr Manini said: “He feels he is going to commit more crimes.

“I appreciate his honesty; he wouldn’t agree to a drug treatment and testing order.

“He’s already tempted to take substances.”

Jailing Doyle, Sheriff Frank Pieri said: “You’ll be sentenced for 100 days and 60 days on the two charges.

“These are to be served consecutively.”
