Thief rams police car in stolen £70k SUV before chase through Leeds

A thief rammed a stolen car into the side of a police vehicle and then tried to make a getaway by leading officers on a chase through north Leeds.

The SUV, which is worth £70,000, was stolen from a property on Lawnswood Vale in the leafy north Leeds suburb of Lawnswood in the early hours of Thursday, January 2.

When traffic cops spotted the dark-coloured SUV, they attempted to stop the car. However, the driver rammed into the passenger side of the BMW police vehicle.

The suspect then tried to make a quick getaway, but they were arrested when they crashed the SUV a short distance away.

The stolen vehicle has since been returned to its owners, but one of the officers involved in the chase has tweeted pictures to show the crumpled passenger door of the police car - and also the extensive damage to the SUV.

"Stolen vehicle recovered from burglary, rammed police vehicle before a short pursuit ended with suspect crashing," said a tweet from the West Yorkshire Police Roads Policing Unit Twitter account.

"1 in the cells and £70,000 of car will be returned to owner."
