Thief punches shop worker before threatening to stab him during raid in Celbridge

An innocent shop worker was punched in the face by a callous thief during a robbery in Co Kildare early this morning.

Gardai are on the hunt for the raider after he stormed a shop on the Clane Road in Celbridge just after midnight.

The store was closed at the time but a worker who lived above the premises was punched in the face.

The thief had allegedly threatened to stab the man for refusing to open the till before fleeing with a quantity of cigarettes.

A garda spokesperson said they are investigating the incident.

They said: "Gardai are investigating a break–in at a shop on Clane Road, Celbridge at 12.30am.

"The shop was closed at the time.  An employee who lives above the shop received minor injuries when he was assaulted by the alleged offender. "Suspect fled on foot not known if anything stolen."
