Thief jailed for 14 months after making off with £1,400 from Asda self service till

An opportunist thief was jailed for 14 months after stealing more than £1,400 from a self service till in Asda,

David McEnhill, 55, appeared from custody to plead guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the offence which happened at the Forge Shopping Centre in February this year.

After he was caught by security, McEnhill came clean to cops when he was cautioned.

Man stabbed outside city centre nightclub

Prosecutor Lauren Staunton said: “When Mr McEnhill was cautioned and charged his response was ‘The till was open and I did it, I have a habit'.”

The court heard McEnhill was on licence when the offence occurred at the east end supermarket.

Miss Staunton said security were suspicious about the way McEnhill was acting when he came into the store in late afternoon on February 8.

Prisoner who stabbed fellow inmate with sharpened toothbrush jailed for 13 months

She said: “The accused walked way from the unmanned till at first, but went back.

“The till was ajar and the accused opened the drawers fully, receiving £1,430 in notes and went towards the exit.”

Defence lawyer Ian McLelland said: “This was opportunistic by Mr McEnhill.

“He had been in Asda to try and steal something through shoplifting but noticed the till was slightly ajar.”

McEnhill has previous convictions for theft.

Sheriff John McCormick jailed McEnhill for 14 months.
