Thief attacked farmer who caught him secretly living in caravan owned by victim

A thief who attacked the farmer who caught him red-handed had been secretly living in a caravan owned by his victim.

Farmer Jonathan Weir found Peter Thomson, 38, with the caravan keys, a knife and other items on his farm near Blackford, Perthshire, last June.

Thomson said the caravan was his because he had the keys, which he had stolen from Jonathan’s tool shed.

He then tried to punch the farmer.

There were signs he had been sleeping in the caravan.

At Dundee Sheriff Court, Thomson, of Falkirk, admitted breaking into the shed, stealing the keys, knife and other items, knife possession and assault.

His lawyer said he had gone “off the rails”.

Sentence was deferred for reports.
