A car thief has this morning admitted mowing down a police officer with his own patrol car, leaving him with "life-changing" injuries.

PC Gareth Phillips, 42, was left with a shattered pelvis and could be in hospital for several months after his BMW was hijacked at a traffic stop.

Mubashar Hussain, 29, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to the police officer, as well as 11 other offences at Birmingham Crown Court.

PC Phillips, an officer with West Midlands Police, was injured during a traffic stop in Moseley, Birmingham, on August 10. He was then struck by his own vehicle and at one point was pinned underneath it.
