Thick smoke billows above homes following fire in Risca

Firefighters have been at the scene of a fire in Pontymister, Risca, which saw thick smoke billowing into the air.

The fire broke out on Commercial Lane, behind Commercial Street, at 12.40pm on June 25. It is understood that a vehicle was alight near an old scrap yard in the area.

Local resident Rhys Jasper said he noticed smoke and flames from his bathroom window at around 1pm. The 28-year-old said: "My wife noticed the flames and smoke from our bathroom window. The smoke was very dark so could be seen from a quick glance which lead her to look further up the road.

"I'm not sure how long it was going on for but considering the time we noticed it and drove past it to walk the dogs, it must have been at least an hour. It was out when we returned from our walk. Fires seem to be more and more common in this area but mainly towards Ty Sign."

Another local resident, who did not want to be named, said a strong smell of burning rubber had been left by the fire.

A Gwent Police spokesman said: “We’ve received a report of a fire in Commercial Lane, Pontymister, Risca at around 12.40pm on Friday 25 June.

“Officers from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have attended and the incident is ongoing.”

The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said “multiple crews” were in attendance after it received reports of a vehicle fire at around 12.35pm.
