Thick acrid smoke seen billowing into air as flames engulf car

Huge plumes of thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the air after a car fire in Oldham.

Firefighters rushed down to Busk Road just before 4pm today (Monday) to the blaze involving a Vauxhall Insignia.

An eyewitness said: "I was driving down the bypass in Oldham, I could see smoke billowing from behind the vets.

"There was dark black acrid smoke. I could smell it coming through my car. I looked over and saw some children with their phones.

"I thought it was rubbish on fire. I looked closer and saw it was an Insignia. I looked closer and the flames were coming out from the front of the windscreen.

"They were really high flames."

He then saw a firefighter battle the fire with a hose reel through the passenger side window.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “At around 3:50 pm today, one fire engine from Chadderton fire station was called to a report of a car on fire on Busk Road, Oldham.

“The crew was quickly on the scene and extinguished the fire using one hose reel and a breathing apparatus.

"Firefighters were in attendance for around 20 minutes.”
