Thibaut Courtois in tears as Belgium legend forced off injured in Spain match

  • Thibaut Courtois left the pitch in tears after picking up an injury in Belgium’s World Cup quarter-final with Spain on Friday.
  • Courtois, who is playing at his fourth World Cup, had made a string of fine saves to keep the score at 1-1 heading into the final quarter of the match.
  • However, the Real Madrid goalkeeper went down clutching his leg and required treatment midway through the second half.
  • He tried to play on for a couple of minutes but quickly realised he was in no position to continue and signalled to the bench that he needed to come off, with Manchester United’s Senne Lammens replacing him.
  • Lammens then made a crucial error in the final minutes of the game, spilling the ball at the feet of Mikel Merino who fired home to hand Spain a 2-1 win and a spot in the semi-finals.
