Thibaut Courtois clarifies comments on Real Madrid deserving title more than Barcelona if LaLiga is cancelled

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois claims he never said Los Blancos should be crowned champions of LaLiga instead of Barcelona if the competition was called off.

The Belgian international, who turned 28 this week, had appeared to insinuate that Madrid would be more deserving of the title than league leaders Barca – because they had been better in the two Clasico clashes played this season.

But the former Chelsea and Atletico shot-stopper told TVE: "At no time did I say that Madrid should be crowned champions if LaLiga is ended (without the remain fixtures being played).

"We are in better shape, even though we lost to Betis (in their last game before the shutdown due to coronavirus) and if we play the 11 games that are left, I'm confident that my team can win LaLiga."

Madrid's players are now back in training at their Valdebebas base after almost two months at home and Courtois said: "It has been strange because of all the rules, but there's nothing better than feeling the pitch again."

Real are set to play their remaining home games at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, which belongs to their youth side Castilla, as works continue to renovate the Santiago Bernabeu.

"We like playing at the Bernabeu," he said. "But playing at a stadium which has the name of a club legend is also cool."
