Chelsea have made it two new contract announcements in one day after it was announced that Thiago Silva has put pen-to-paper on a new deal one-year deal with the club.
The veteran Brazilian defender joined the club on a free transfer from Paris St Germain last summer and quickly established himself as a key part of the Blues defence under Frank Lampard.
Silva scored twice in 34 appearances last season as his performances belied his 36 years of age, putting in a number of commanding performances in the Blues' run to the Champions League final.
He started that game in Porto but was forced off five minutes before half time after suffering a groin injury, replaced by Andreas Christensen for the remainder of the game.
Silva has been a key part of not only the four-man backline that was employed by Lampard but also the five-man defence that was used by Thomas Tuchel, who has also put pen-to-paper on a contract extension.
The Brazilian missed a small period of time this season having sustained a muscle problem in Tuchel's third game in charge, a win at Spurs, which saw him ruled out for a month.
However, he came roaring back to feature prominently for the remainder of the season though Tuchel did try and give a rest to Silva whenever he could.
The defender has really bought into what it means to be a Chelsea player, regularly posting himself watching the women's team on social media and at times taking on the role of a coach on the sidelines, such is his experience and standing in the game.
None more so than during the Champions League last 16 win over Atletico Madrid, where Silva was spotted jumping up and down in the stands with the suspended Jorginho and Mason Mount when Chelsea won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Tuchel's new two-year contract extension was announced earlier by the club on Friday, meaning he is tied down to them until the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
