Thiago Silva could be denied dream shirt number at Chelsea amid transfer links

Chelsea have been active so far in the transfer window.

The Blues have added both Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner to their squad with Frank Lampard looking to strengthen in order to challenge both Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table next season.

The Chelsea boss is also closing in on a move for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz, with Marina Granovskaia locked in discussions with the Bundesliga side over a summer transfer.

But it is not only in attacking areas where Chelsea are looking to strengthen, with Leicester City full-back Ben Chilwell closing in on a move to Stamford Bridge after a breakthrough in negotiations between the two clubs.

Another player who could be on the move to Stamford Bridge this summer is Paris Saint-Germain centre-back.

Various reports claim that Chelsea are in advanced talks with the defender, who is available on a free transfer after the Champions League final on Sunday night.

The 35-year-old is out of contract at the Ligue 1 giants and is set to play his last game for the club as they take on Bayern Munich in a showpiece final.

Should he play in the match, Silva will have the number two on his back, but may be denied that squad number should he complete a move to Chelsea in the next few weeks.

That is because the number is currently taken by Blues’ defender Antonio Rudiger, who has had the squad number since the 2017/18 season.

Silva has also worn the number 12 shirt at PSG, but that is also taken in the Chelsea squad, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek wearing that number.

It means that Silva may have to settle for the number 33 shirt, which he wore during his time at AC Milan.

Emerson’s likely summer exit will leave it free for the experienced defender, but if that should not work out then Silva will have to wear a number he hasn’t worn before.

Number 6 is likely to be available, with Danny Drinkwater holding the shirt, and could be an option for the Brazilian should he fancy a change.
