Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell in, Kepa out - the Chelsea team Frank Lampard should pick vs Barnsley

Frank Lampard will make a host of changes for tomorrow night's Carabao Cup third round game at home to Barnsley.

Predicting them is another challenge altogether.

Football.London's writers have their say on who they expect to see in action at Stamford Bridge.

Alan Smith, senior writer

The depth of the squad will become clear here and Lampard should be able to make XI changes while putting out a team full of internationals that should be able to outclass their Championship visitors.

We know Willy Caballero will start in goal and it seems pretty certain that Cesar Azpilicueta, Ross Barkley and Callum Hudson-Odoi will get a go.

But does the head coach select Tammy Abraham or Olivier Giroud? The former has come off the bench in the league so seems more likely.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Fikayo Tomori and Toni Rudiger should also get opportunities to stake a claim for more minutes going forward but will Lampard seek to give debuts to Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva in a comparatively low-press environment?

This selection could be wildly wrong but here is an educated guess...

Smith's team: Caballero; Azpilicueta, Tomori, Thiago Silva, Emerson; Jorginho; Loftus-Cheek, Barkley, Kovacic, Hudson-Odoi; Abraham.

Oliver Harbord, Chelsea correspondent

The Carabao Cup will be the perfect chance to give some game time to those who haven’t had the minutes.

Players like Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell, if they are ready, should come into the game for at least 60 minutes or so to get some match tempo in their legs.

That’s the same for Christian Pulisic as well, who is yet to make an appearance this season but the Blues need back desperately.

As for up front, it would be a good chance to give Callum Hudson-Odoi the chance to prove himself, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek also looking to grow in confidence.

Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud are set to battle it out for a place in the starting XI, with the former most likely to get the chance.

Chelsea have a very busy schedule coming up, but these types of games are needed for the squad players to get some minutes.

Harbord’s team: Caballero; Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Tomori, Chilwell; Barkley, Kovacic; Hudson-Odoi, Loftus-Cheek, Pulisic; Abraham.
