Thiago reveals role Philippe Coutinho played in his Liverpool transfer

Thiago Alcantara has revealed he asked former Liverpool stars Philippe Coutinho and Xabi Alonso about the club before making his move from Bayern Munich.

The Reds confirmed the deal worth up to £25m on Friday afternoon after talks between the English and European champions accelerated from Monday.

But the Spanish midfielder admitted he still had some questions over his new home and it was about more than just football - thankfully, a couple of former Kop favourites were there to assist.

The 29-year-old decided to turn to former Bayern and Liverpool stars Xabi Alonso and Phillippe Coutinho, who won the UEFA Champions League alongside Thiago last season while on loan from Barcelona, about the city itself.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com he said: "More than the football aspect because in the end, Liverpool is what it is for the last years, the last decades. They were amazing, they performed and it is raising every year as much as you can, as much as they can, as much as we can, is what I should say.

"More than that, it is the family aspect, the life aspect – how is the city? Where to go. How was the life [here]? People like Philippe Coutinho and Xabi Alonso helped me a lot to take this last step. It’s really good."

Thiago also commented how happy he is to be able to work with Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, after making the Reds boss suffer a bit while he was in charge of Borussia Dortmund.

He said: "I am glad to have him as a coach to try to reach my football, to try to learn as much as I can with the team.

"Yeah, he suffered a little bit with me there in the Bundesliga when he was at Dortmund! But in football, you have these moments of joy and also you have not-so-good moments. We suffered that with elimination last year against Liverpool."

The new number six's ambition is clear now he is a Liverpool player, as he believes he is a good fit for the club as he wants to bring even more trophies to Anfield.

Thiago said: "I think this club describes what I am as well; I want to achieve all of the goals, win as many trophies as possible.

“It also [has] this kind of family [feeling] that I need because we [like to] have a very close relationship with the club and I think I will feel this, I will have this feeling, with this club as well.”

Thiago is the second signing of the window so far after Kostas Tsimikas - and Jurgen Klopp has explained how he could make a shock debut against Chelsea.
