Thiago Alcantara suspected positive Covid test as Liverpool hit by Jordan Henderson absence for Tottenham

Thiago Alcantara has become the latest Liverpool player to return a suspected positive coronavirus result. But Jordan Henderson remains negative for the virus despite going down with illness this weekend.

Thiago joins the lengthening list of Liverpool players who will miss the Premier League clash at Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.

Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones are all again absent after also sitting out Thursday's 3-1 win over Newcastle United having contracted the virus.

Henderson, while returning a negative result in the latest tests carried out on Sunday, is not well enough to feature at Tottenham.

Is it the second time Thiago has tested positive having contracted the virus last year.

Despite the growing absentee list, Liverpool have once again opted not to seek a postponement with Jurgen Klopp keen for the game in London to go ahead.

The match is one of only four Premier League fixtures to go ahead this weekend with the remainder having been called off due to the Omicron variant sweeping the country at present.

The absence of both Thiago and Henderson has prompted Klopp to completely overhaul his midfield at Tottenham.

It means a first Premier League start for 19-year-old Tyler Morton, who joins James Milner and Naby Keita in the reshaped engine room.

Alisson Becker is in goal, with Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate continuing at centre-back while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson are the full-backs.

Up top, rumours Mohamed Salah misses out were unfounded with the Egyptian again alongside Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota.

Jarell Quansah, the 18-year-old centre-back who was captain of the under-18s team that reached the FA Youth Cup final last season, is on the bench for the first time in a senior match, with Kaide Gordon also among the substitutes.

All told, Liverpool are missing nine players this afternoon.

LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Konate, Robertson; Morton, Milner, Keita; Salah, Jota, Mane. Subs: Kelleher, Firmino, Gomez, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Minamino, Tsimikas, Gordon, Williams, Quansah.
