Thiago Alcantara will make his first start for Liverpool in more than two months as Jurgen Klopp named a surprise starting line-up against Southampton.
Thiago, who made his comeback from injury as a substitute at Newcastle United in midweek, is one of three changes for the Premier League clash at St Mary’s this evening.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain starts for the first time this season after a knee injury, and is joined in midfield by the returning Gini Wijnaldum, who was on the bench in midweek.
But the most noteworthy alteration is a positional one with skipper Jordan Henderson dropping back to partner Fabinho in central defence.
Henderson last began a match at centre-back when lining up alongside Joe Gomez in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final win over Monterrey in December 2019.
Alisson Becker continues in goal with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson the full-backs.
Up front, there is no change with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino comprising the forward line.
LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Henderson, Fabinho, Robertson; Wijnaldum, Thiago, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Salah, Firmino, Mane.
Subs: Kelleher, Milner, Jones, Minamino, Shaqiri, Origi, R Williams, Phillips, N Williams.
