Thiago Alcantara's absence from the Liverpool squad to play Arsenal explained

Thiago Alcantara has tested positive for COVID-19.

Liverpool's new summer signing was absent from the squad to face Arsenal at Anfield on Monday night and it has been confirmed that the Spanish midfielder has COVID-19.

Thiago was a £20million signing from Bayern Munich earlier this month and made his debut when coming off the bench during the 2-0 win over Chelsea.

However, he was absent for the Reds' next Premier League game - against Arsenal on Monday night - with talk of an injury.

That injury was never confirmed, however, and it has since been revealed that the 29-year-old has been struck down with coronavirus.

Premier League players are tested for COVID-19 twice a week, with ten positive cases being announced at the beginning of this week, of which Thiago is one.

The Spaniard will now enter a period of self-isolation for ten days before linking back up with the Liverpool squad.

In a statement on their official Twitter page, Liverpool said: "Thiago Alcantara has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently self-isolating according to the necessary guidelines.

"The club has, and will continue to follow, all protocols relating to COVID-19 and Thiago will remain in self-isolation for the required period of time."
