Thiago Alcantara reacts to his first Liverpool goal in win vs Southampton

Thiago Alcantara has given his verdict on scoring his first goal for Liverpool.

The Reds secured a 2-0 win at home to Southampton, to keep their faint hopes of a top four finish alive.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring for Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield in the first half, nodding the ball home after a sublime Mohamed Salah cross.

Despite Southampton not getting on the scoresheet, the game was nervy and there were fears it would go the same way as recent draws with Leeds and Newcastle.

However, Thiago had other ideas as he struck the ball home from just outside the area in the closing moments to seal all three points.

Despite it being his first goal in a red shirt, Thiago insisted that the win for the team was more important, as they kept the hope of finishing in the top four a reality.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Thiago told Sky Sports .

"But the most important thing is the three points and that we keep fighting for this small miracle that we can have.”

Thiago continued: “We are in the Premier League, even when you are 2-0, you’re not nervous but quiet about the situation.

"Trying to get the ball, trying to get control of the game, but sometimes teams are just good as well and they can create some chances.”

The win sees Liverpool move up to sixth place in the table and four points adrift of fourth-placed Leicester City, with a game in hand.
