Thiago Alcantara explains why he refuses to touch the This Is Anfield sign at Liverpool

Thiago Alcantara refused to touch the This Is Anfield sign during a stadium tour after being announced as Liverpool's latest signing.

The Spaniard, who was signed for £26million from Bayern Munich, explained that to do so would show a lack of respect because he is yet to win a trophy with the Reds.

"As I heard once from Fernando Torres, this remains heavily the place we passed by for a couple of years, four more years," said Thiago, while looking up at the sign.

"And to touch this symbol we have to deserve it and to win all the trophies we can and so that's why today I will not [touch the sign]. I will respect this tradition."

Jurgen Klopp made not touching the sign a rule when he was named Liverpool boss in 2015.

The German, who echoed Thiago's sentiment, told his squad that they had to win some silverware first.

"I've told my players not to touch the 'This Is Anfield' sign until they win something," explained Klopp. "It's a sign of respect."

Liverpool have since gone on to enjoy major success, winning the Champions League in 2019 before following this up by lifting the Premier League in 2020.

Thiago will no doubt go on to win silverware at Liverpool, and will one day be allowed to touch the sign.

But for now he is clearly respecting the rules, while demonstrating he understands the club.
