Thiago Alcantara explains Liverpool goal celebration and makes scoring guarantee

Thiago Alcantara has dedicated his first Liverpool goal to Jurgen Klopp's squad players.

The midfielder scored late on in the 2-0 win over Southampton on Saturday night to send the Reds up to sixth in the Premier League.

The former Bayern Munich man capped an excellent performance with a well-taken finish on the edge of the box to move Liverpool to within six points of fourth-place Leicester with a game in hand still to play.

Thiago celebrated his maiden Anfield strike by pointing towards the bench where Klopp's squad were sitting and he later said the goal was for the players he shares a "special relationship" with.

"One hundred percent, I don't score many, but it will not be the last," Thiago told LFCTV.

"The most important thing is we have the three points.

"We try to keep scoring, being near the box to make the last pass and score, but the most important thing is to have the high rhythm and also play good football.

"Always, for sure, I have a special relationship with the guys there that didn't play and also when you are playing you are always thinking about them, how they play, how they behave even when they don't play, so it was for them.

"[It was] for the squad players, for sure.

"As we discussed and I said to the guys, our main aim is always the next game that we have and not the final result of the season, so now we are facing a great game on Thursday (against Manchester United).

"Especially here at Anfield we've had many situations where they score the goal [after] we've dominated the game, they score and we break down a bit.

"But also after this result at 1-0 we get a bit, how you say in Germany, a bit hectic, so fortunately we could score the second one and bring a bit of calm to the game."

Liverpool's final home game of the campaign will come on May 23 when Crystal Palace visit an Anfield that will have 10,000 fans in attendance.

It will be the biggest attendance at the stadium since March 2020 as football prepares to welcome back larger crowds for next season.

Thiago said he is looking forward to finally playing in front of both supporters and his family for the first time since the £25million switch from Bayern Munich in September.

He added: "I hope [this is the last empty stadium game].

"We have at home huge fans and they want to know this stadium and watch live games, so it will be a double joy that we have fans and our family here with us."
