Thiago Alcantara breaks Premier League record in first 45 minutes for Liverpool

Thiago Alcantara only needed 45 minutes in a Liverpool shirt to break a Premier League record.

The Spaniard, who arrived for £20m from Bayern Munich on Friday, got his debut two days later in the Reds' 2-0 win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Sadio Mane grabbed both goals in the second half as Frank Lampard's side saw Andreas Christensen get a red card following a VAR review.

But the stats from the game show how much impact Thiago had when he stepped off the bench for the second half.

The 29-year-old completed 75 passes in his time on the pitch, which is more than any of the Chelsea players throughout the game.

It is also the most successful passes completed by any player with a maximum of 45 minutes in the Premier League since records began in the 2003-04 season.

The stats were soon shared on Twitter, where the Anfield faithful were left in awe of their new signing.

"Scary to think what's to come," one supporter said.

Another commented: "God he is so good."

While a third gave the midfielder a new title, with: "Already the best passer in the league."

And a fourth simply added: "What a signing."

Liverpool knew they were getting a passing specialist when the Spaniard signed, with Thiago averaging 91 per-cent pass completion over the last four seasons.

While the 29-year-old managed to average 82 completed passes per game over that time.

It comes as the midfielder's former coach Luis Milla told Mirror Sport how the No.6's signing would change the Premier League champions.

"It was clear from the start just how good he would be," the former Spain national academy coach said.

"In spite of his age he was extremely mature, with lots of talent, and I saw straight away the ability he had. He has shown everybody what he can do since then.

"Technically he is superb but he is a leader as well. He understands what is needed on the pitch in every moment, the intensity, the rhythm of the game, and he does it all so well. It’s been hugely satisfying to see how he has progressed."

Thiago's impressive performance was one of the five talking points Mirror Sport picked out from the Red's win at Stamford Bridge.
