She was a respected doctor, he was a hero firefighter. They worked tirelessly to retire to Australia - before being murdered in Sri Lanka

The cousin of a highly-respected Manchester fire fighter who died in the Sri Lanka terror attacks alongside his wife has attack has paid tribute to the 'outgoing, travel loving' couple.

Hero ex-firefighter from Manchester and wife killed in Sri Lanka terror attacks, 56, and his wife Sally Bradley were both killed in the Easter Sunday bombings while holidaying in the country.

Dr Bradley, also 56, was the sister of former Manchester Withington MP Lord Keith Bradley.

Bill's son, who was also in Sri Lanka at the time, survived the blasts, which targeted churches and hotels.

More than 290 people died, and at least 500 were injured. Eight Britons are among the dead, officials confirmed.

Paying tribute to the couple, Billy's cousin Steve Harrop said he was devastated they lost their lives after having finally fulfilled a dream to move to Australia.

He said: "They were outgoing, good people.

"We used to play together when we were kids. My mum's house burnt down and he was the first one on the scene making sure she was alright.

"They were a close family, they loved to travel and get about.

"They were outgoing and very family orientated.

"I heard this morning and I'm just devastated.

"He'd finally got his dream of living in Australia. I just don't understand.

"He worked so hard to get what he wanted and it's all been taken away. I can't believe it."

Mr Harrop was a well known and highly-respected former firefighter who worked in various roles across Greater Manchester. 

He was officially commended for his heroism during the IRA bombing in 1996.

Educated at Sale Grammar School, his firefighting career started at Salford fire station and he progressed onto more senior roles.

The Fire Brigade Union brigade and former colleagues have also paid tribute to 'real character' Billy.

Assistant County Fire Officer Dave Keelan, who had known the couple for many years, said:  "This is devastating news and the thoughts of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are with Bill and Sally's families.

"Bill served here for 30 years, retiring at the end of 2012. He was a much a loved and respected colleague and friend. He will be greatly missed."

Former Stockport Council leader Dave Goddard posted to Twitter: "This has just ruined Easter. Billy Harrop, Stockport Borough Commander GMFRS 2012 killed in Sri Lanka and his wife.

"He was a fantastic fire fighter natural leader and a proper bloke. RIP Billy and Sally."
