'They were very lucky' - Spurs' performance against Man City criticised by former midfielder

Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy has claimed that Spurs were 'very lucky' to come away from the Etihad Stadium with a point on Saturday.

Goals from Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura meant that the game ended in a 2-2 draw, with Tottenham coming from behind twice to draw level However, things could have been different if it wasn't for the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Premier League this season.

Manchester City thought they had won the game thanks to a 93rd minute Gabriel Jesus strike, but celebrations were put on hold when VAR noticed that the ball had brushed Aymeric Laporte's arm on the way to the striker.

A new rule, also bought in this season, means that even if accidental, any handball by the attacking team that leads to a goal being scored, the goal will be disallowed, as was the case here.

Tottenham would have been happy to come away from the game with a draw after such a close call, the Lilywhites also faced 30 shots against them, the most in a Premier League fixture since 2011.

Speaking on Match of the Day, former England midfielder Murphy pointed at improvements that could have been made in the first half performance by Mauricio Pochettino's men.

"When you play Man City you have to do something special," he said. "They were reactive not proactive and could have been three or four goals down in the first half.

"They should have stuck someone on De Bruyne. They should have done a better job of sticking with their runners."

Lucas Moura was bought on as a second half substitute, and made an instant impact, scoring the all important equaliser after just 19 seconds.

"In the second half they brought on a forward [Moura] on and after the goal they performed better," Murphy added. "They were very lucky, though.”
