'They shot themselves in the foot' - Alan Shearer on Newcastle's defeat to Manchester United

While Newcastle United's performance against Manchester United was 'disappointing', it shouldn't take away from what Steve Bruce has done in his opening few months as Magpies' boss.

That's the view of United legend Alan Shearer who was on commentary duty for Amazon Prime.

United took the lead early on through Matty Longstaff but only held onto it for seven minutes as Anthony Martial equalised which set the path for Mason Greenwood, and Marcus Rashford to make it 3-1 at half-time.

Martial grabbed a second just after the break - capitalising on a poor back pass from Sean Longstaff , and there was no way back for Bruce's side.

Shearer, as the final whistle neared offered his analysis: "In terms of Newcastle it’s been a very disappointing evening but it shouldn’t overshadow the job Steve Bruce has done with what he has available to him.

"He’s got a squad with a good attitude and mentality who will give him everything but they’ve been second best tonight and have been punished for mistakes.

"But they [the fans] appreciate the job Bruce has done in difficult circumstances."

After the game, Shearer felt Newcastle only had themselves to blame for the defeat.

The defeat leaves United in 10th place ahead of the visit of Everton to St James' Park on December 28.

"Yeah myself and another 3,000 sat in the away end, we're thinking is their luck about to change here at Old Trafford because as you guys know NUFC's record here is horrendous.

"But they shot themselves in the foot - yes it was a great start, they could and should have been two-up but then it was just mistake after mistake and when you make crazy and stupid mistakes, you expect to be punished anywhere, let alone Old Trafford, and MUFC had the ability and expertise to put those chances away.

"Once they got three, it was a matter of not conceding early on in the second half but once they did it was cruise control for MUFC."
