Fans have been reacting to reacting to Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final draw with Real Madrid and many believe this is a chance for the Reds to settle some scores from the 2018 final between the two clubs.
The pair contested the trophy in Kiev three years ago when Jurgen Klopp’s side were beaten 3-1 after a horrendous double blunder from the goalkeeper Loris Karius, which was later attributed to concussion.
Liverpool also suffered a shoulder injury to their top scorer Mohamed Salah – who had netted 44 times that season – following a challenge from opposition captain Sergio Ramos which forced the Egyptian international to leave the field just after the half-hour mark.
In response to the draw, Robert Mugabo said on Twitter: “Ramos and Salah. No Ronaldo and Bale. We have Alisson. Can't wait for Revenge. Liverpool in the Champions League is a tough side.” Robyn Crewe remarked: “Result. A little payback is due by a certain man running down the wing.”
Lamenting the absence of fans for what could have been a red hot Anfield reception for the second leg – we all saw what happened when Barcelona came to Liverpool’s stadium in the knockout stages of this competition in 2019 – RedGiorgio81 added: “I’m sorry that we won’t give the proper welcome to Ramos.”
Tom Lawrence just wrote: “Revenge time”
Others felt that 13 times winners Real Madrid, now without Cristiano Ronaldo while other ‘Galacticos’ have aged, are not the force they were three years ago.
JaySpearz said: “Great draw that. They’re nothing now.”
Atrocity Exhibition declared: “Bring it on” while Rafael95 simply proclaimed: “Easy.”
More measured approaches came from the likes of Jack Sear, who observed: “Not a bad draw for Liverpool at all. Real Madrid have been poor this season. There will be some Liverpool players very keen to put Kiev right. Think they were probably the third best scenario,” and Christopher Wright who remarked: “Reckon Liverpool will have a chance against Madrid. Yes the Reds will be underdogs but Madrid are not what they used to be. Whatever defence Klopp puts out, they going to have to be at their best as the Champions League is their only shot at silverware this season.”
Meanwhile, Greg Wood seemed to be in the minority among Kopites with his cautionary message of : “Still need to up our levels. Can't see us scoring goals currently.”
