'They make up the numbers in the Premier League' - Sunderland's Stewart Donald jokingly pokes fun at Newcastle United

Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has taken time out of his Wembley weekend to jokingly poke fun at north-east rivals Newcastle United.

The businessman is preparing for the Checkatrade Trophy Final in which Sunderland will be playing Portsmouth but after a Newcastle fan tweeted him about the game and said the Black Cats would give anything to be in United's place, he responded in a light-hearted manner.

Posting on the social media site in response to a Newcastle United fan, Donald wrote: "I don't know much about NUFC, to be honest.

"The only domestic cup I think they have won in my lifetime was the some Texaco Cup thing? I only know they make up numbers in the Premier League.

"SAFC are much bigger than NUFC down south so nobody down here talks or knows much about them, sorry."

United won the Texaco Cup - which was a competition made up of teams for the UK who had not qualified for Europe - in 1974 and 1975.

The Magpies have a Premier League clash this weekend against Arsenal on Monday night.
