'They'll be able to see into our bedrooms': Residents' fears as four-storey apartments planned to be built next to their homes

People living in front of a disused railway line are concerned about recently updated plans for high-rise apartment blocks to be built on the land.

In June 2018, Dorbcrest Homes submitted proposals to build three four-storey buildings, consisting of 12 apartments and 18 five-bedroom houses of multiple occupancy (HMO), on land next to Minerva Road, Farnworth.

At the time, residents formed an action group to oppose the plans and voiced concerns about loss of privacy, loss of light and being overlooked.

Planning agent Paul Sedgwick, of Sedgwick Associates, sent revised plans to officials in August 2019 following a period where the proposals were held in abeyance.

At the time, he said he made the changes to "ensure that visual separation distances are respected".

Earlier this week, more updated drawings were uploaded to Bolton Council's planning portal, creating fresh fears for the people living on Kingsland Road, directly in front of the land.

Audrey Goodinson, 66, has lived on the road for 33 years.

She said: "The plans have changed but all we can see is that there's going to be more windows on the side elevation so they'll be able to see into our bedrooms and our garden. We've got nine young grandchildren.

"Over the years, we've asked and asked for them to cut the trees down because they were blocking our sunlight.

"They refused because they said they were protected woodland but all of a sudden they've gone. We're thinking about selling up. It's not fair."

Next door neighbours Deborah and Stephen Hall, 58 and 60, are also thinking of moving if the plans go through.

Deborah said: "We're just worried about exactly what they're going to be and what it's going to mean for the area. Our fence backs right onto it so we're worried about how high they're going to be and privacy.

"We've lived here 20 years but I've been looking at moving. The application describes the land as an eyesore but they made it like that.

"It used to be a banking with trees and squirrels running around.

"I've lived in Farnworth for my entire married life - 38 years - and I thought I'd grow old here but I don't know anymore."

Stephen added: "They wouldn't dream of putting something like that in Bromley Cross, Turton, places like that. "We've never been broken into but I can't see that staying the same once that goes up."

In a letter to the planning department, Paul Sedgwick suggested that the apartments were mostly being targeted at staff from Royal Bolton Hospital and students, once Bolton College of Medical Sciences is built nearby.

He wrote: "My client sees an opportunity to provide HMO accommodation in proximity to the hospital and its educational facilities as well as meeting demand arising within the workforce and students for form of accommodation."

Paul Sedgwick has been contacted for a comment.
