'They just go wherever their team is playing' - Dion Dublin praises Newcastle United fans for travelling

Newcastle United's game against Arsenal this weekend will be the 15th consecutive Premier League game on a Monday night to played away from home by the Magpies.

The last time United had a home fixture in the Premier League on a Monday night since being promoted the first time around in 2010, was against Wigan in December 2012 - United won 3-0.

Football Focus host Dan Walker while previewing the clash on Monday at the Emirates relayed the 15th consecutive game stat - of which United have lost 11 - to guests Jonathan Walters and Dion Dublin.

Dublin, who has also found post-playing fame on Homes Under The Hammer, was left visibly shocked at the stat.

"It's very unfair on the pocket - it's a lot of miles.

"The thing is, if they had another 10 or 15 to go, they'd still travel.

"That's Newcastle United fans, they just go where ever their team is playing."

Chronicle Live ran a special report on United' s list of Monday night fixtures, speaking to both Sky and BT Sport as well as fans and MPs.

Sources close to Sky claim that the best is done to help avoid any disruption for away fans, but with the distances between club - travel headaches have to be expected.

Meanwhile a spokesman for BT Sport said: "Fixture scheduling is a complex process overseen by multiple parties including broadcasters, leagues, clubs and the local authorities.

"When making game selections we will always aim to choose the editorially strongest game available to us, and influenced by many factors not least the narrative of the season.

"We do this whilst taking many other factors into account; other competitions that clubs may or may not be in, the number of times we have already selected clubs and future selection plans. Ultimately, the timing of any televised game is dictated by our Premier League deal.”
