‘They haven’t finished writing it’: Marvel star offers incredibly worrying update on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Recent MCU instalments have given us the impression that Marvel Studios has finally learned its lesson when it comes to how it approaches its major project but a concerning update from an actor involved in Avengers: Doomsday suggests the studio is slipping back into bad habits already.

Marvel star Rebecca Romijn, who played the OG Mystique in the 2000’s X-Men films confirmed a worrying rumor by saying the last thing fans want to hear. Doomsday will see plenty of legacy characters back on the big screen and the actress will be among those reprising her iconic role in the upcoming film. However, she crushed some fans hopes when she let slip that the script for the major blockbuster, which Marvel has pinned all its hopes on, hasn’t got a finished script yet. This is despite the fact filming for the project began several months ago.

This doesn’t bode well for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ being as good as its predecessors

Responding to questions at San Diego Comic-Con, Romijn was asked if she had finished filming her part for the film to which she claimed she wasn’t sure, stating, “The script hasn’t – they haven’t finished writing it.”

She did have great things to say about her experience on set, but the revelation that the creatives behind the most important Marvel project in almost a decade haven’t got a solid script written has caused concern, although Romijn claimed it was all to “keep everything under wraps.”

Now I’m not a filmmaker so I could be wrong. But isn’t the script supposed to come before you start shooting the movie? This isn’t an entirely new approach for Marvel as the studio has a tendency to change massive story elements and characters last minute. In some cases major plot points have been changed very close to a film’s release, just look at the changes made to Tim Blake Nelson’s “The Leader” after re-shoots for Captain America: Brave New World. And yes, I am sorry I had to bring up that film.

The audience don’t know what to expect

With the precarious place the MCU is in right now they really need a win. Old controversies and recent flops have left the whole universe feeling like it’s become untethered. There’s been very little set up or build up to this new Avengers film and this news has some fans shook. One person wrote on X that they simply didn’t know what to expect.

Another quipped that we’ll have to pre-order tickets before the script is finished.

Others simply expressed shock at the baffling approach to making this film.

While the geniuses behind the MCU may have gotten away with unfinished scripts in past films there is a lot riding on this one. On top of that, Marvel isn’t the powerhouse it once was so audiences won’t be so forgiving if this film drops the ball. Hopefully Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers know what they’re doing.
