'They have to get it right' - Group calls for better cycling provision on A52

Campaigners are calling for better cycling infrastructure on the A52 ahead of major improvement work taking place on the road.

Highways England will carry out work at the Nottingham Knight and Wheatcroft roundabouts which will include building extra link roads, providing additional traffic lanes, increasing the size of the roundabouts, and introducing traffic signals.

It says both junctions on the A52 "suffer from severe congestion at peak travel times, leading to long queues on all approaches".

The work is due to start in 2022 and is one of a number of projects to improve junctions along the A52, estimated at a total cost of £68.5million.

But cycling pressure group Pedals, which campaigns for better cycling provision in Nottingham, wants to see provisions along the A52 which will encourage more cyclists to use it.

Calls are being made for upgrades to Clifton Boulevard by University Park between Derby Road and Dunkirk island.

They also want to see improvements further out of the city at Nottingham Knight island and the Silverdale, Gamston and Radcliffe-on-Trent junctions.

Matt Turner, 33, chairman of Pedals Nottingham, said: "Highways England is spending a lot of money on upgrading junctions along the A52 which will increase the capacity along the road.

"We want to see better provision for people cycling and walking along the road.

"It's one of the major roads into the city. They have to get it right now, or it will affect people for years. There is a great opportunity here to encourage more cyclists to use it and enable provision for more people.

"We feel they are focusing more on increasing the number of cars that can use the road, rather than the cyclists."

A Highways England spokeswoman said: “Safety is always our number one concern and we regularly meet and work with members of Pedals to help keep cyclists safe on our network.

“There are significant enhancements planned for cyclists as part of our A52 Nottingham junctions improvements scheme.

"We continue to liaise with Pedals over these to ensure we deliver schemes which meet the needs of our communities.

“We are committed to creating an integrated road network, providing safe roads for all users.”

A spokesperson for Nottingham City Council added: “The A52 is the responsibility of Highways England and so the city council don’t have any control over cycle schemes along it.

"We are however, supportive of plans for improvements to cycle paths along the A52 as this will connect into other key routes around the city.”
