'They have to be respected' - Manchester United icon Eric Cantona condemns treatment of fans by Super League rebels

Eric Cantona has condemned the treatment of fans by the 12 clubs who have proposed to start the European Super League.

The football world has been thrown into chaos following the announcement that Manchester United, along with five Premier League rivals and three teams each from Italy and Spain, are planning on breaking away from the Champions League to start their own competition, one from which they would face no relegation.

Supporters, pundits, former players and politicians have all been left in dismay at the news and United club legend Cantona is the latest to voice his displeasure.

The iconic Frenchman has taken to Instagram to slam the 12 'leading European clubs' for their treatment of their supporters.

"I'm going to say something about the European Super League," he said.

"Since one year we have seen games on TV with the best clubs in the world and the best players in the world and it was so boring. And it's still so boring.

"Because the fans are not there. The fans singing, jumping, supporting their teams.

"So the fans are the most important thing in football, they have to be respected.

"Did these big clubs ask their fans what they thought about this idea? No. Unfortunately and that's a shame."

The caption on the video also read: 'Power to the fans!'
