Speaker Mike Johnson made a clear prediction this week about what would happen if Democrats take control of the House in the 2026 midterm elections. During an appearance on Fox News, Johnson warned that a Democratic majority would move to impeach President Donald Trump for a third time.
Johnson appeared on The Ingraham Angle on Tuesday evening, where host Laura Ingraham asked about the Republican Party’s narrow majority in the House. Johnson said he feels confident about growing that majority in the coming midterms but painted a dark picture of what would happen if Republicans lose control.
“We’re gonna win the midterms, absolutely,” Johnson said, according to Huffpost. “We’re gonna have a big victory. And I think we can expand that majority so we can keep going. We have to give President Trump four years and not two. Imagine if the Democrats took over the House; they’d impeach him.”
Republicans plan to use impeachment fears in 2026 campaign
The threat of impeachment has become a main talking point for Republicans as they get ready for the 2026 midterm elections. Johnson and other GOP leaders have been using the possibility of another impeachment to rally their base and get voters to show up. A senior GOP strategist told reporters that impeachment “will be the subtext of everything we do, whether it’s said overtly or not.”

Trump was impeached twice during his first term in office. The first impeachment came after he suggested holding back military aid from Ukraine unless it looked into Joe Biden. The second impeachment came after his attempts to reverse the 2020 election results and his role in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
Even with Republican warnings, many Democratic lawmakers have been careful about talking about impeachment. According to a Politico report from August, Democratic leaders don’t want to go after impeachment again after two failed attempts. Rep. Pete Aguilar, the third highest ranking Democrat in the House, said that impeachment “is not an exercise that we’re willing to undertake.”
But Johnson seems sure that Democrats would go ahead with impeachment if they win back the House. In a separate interview with USA Today, he said that “Democrats would vote to impeach Trump on their first day” if they take control. Republicans right now hold a narrow four seat lead in the House, making the 2026 midterms very close. Several political websites have been keeping track of what they see as possible impeachable offenses by Trump in 2025, though Democratic leadership has mostly stayed away from the topic in public.
