'They are up for it' Angus Kinnear on Leeds United's special rivalry with Manchester United

Leeds United’s managing director Angus Kinnear has spoken out about just how much the rivalry with Manchester United means.

Speaking to Leeds fans at an event in Perth on Wednesday afternoon, Kinnear gave an insight on a number of topics, from Kalvin Phillips’ future at the club , to the plans and objectives of the upcoming centenary season, as well as what supporters can expect of marquee signing Helder Costa.

The main event of the Australia tour is undoubtedly the friendly against Manchester United, the first meeting with the old rivals since a League Cup clash in 2011.

“It’s a mark of the scale of how many are attracted towards Leeds,” said Kinnear. "Leeds should be playing Manchester United regularly. I think it's a sign that the promoters out here saw how it could bring lots of people to the city.”

He also explained exactly why the rivalry between the clubs is so special.

“It’s rooted in history. It’s a history that goes back hundreds of years before people have known football in terms of the regions but I think there’s been so many great games between the teams and so many colourful characters,” he explained.

“Last night we had an event with Bryan Robson and Dennis Irwin and you can tell that it really mattered to them.

“They were both very adamant to say we’ll beat you, the players are really up for it, this is not a friendly. The fact that they haven’t played each other for so long means that the night’s going to be special.”

The game gets underway at 7pm at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
