'They almost don't need to look' - What Newcastle United will get from Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser

Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser made Premier League history together at Bournemouth - and Steve Bruce will hope that partnership bears fruit when the pair complete their moves to Newcastle United.

After making significant progress over the weekend, the Magpies have completed a £20m move for Wilson, and are closing in on signing Fraser on a free transfer.

The pair spent six seasons together at Bournemouth and helped fire the club to promotion in 2015 before making a big impression in the top-flight.

Wilson and Fraser established a remarkable understanding together and the pair combined for 12 Premier League goals in 2018/19 - which is the most ever in a 38-game season.

To put that fruitful partnership into perspective, Fraser set up Wilson seven times and the striker returned the favour on five occasions that season.

It is quite rare for a winger and a striker to have such a mutually profitable partnership; strikers Alan Shearer and Mike Newell had previously held the record over a 38-game season following their exploits up front together for Blackburn Rovers.

Bruce has targeted proven Premier League players this summer and, while their partnership was not quite so profitable last season, it is hardly a coincidence that he has been keen to reunite Wilson and Fraser at St James' Park following Bournemouth's relegation to the Championship.

So what makes the partnership so special? Hugo Faria was part of Eddie Howe's backroom team at Bournemouth and the club's former first-team assistant coach witnessed Wilson and Fraser's exploits first-hand every day.

"That, for sure, is one of the big things you can get from them," he told ChronicleLive. "They have worked together for so long and they almost don't need to look on the pitch - they already know where they are or where they will move. They are connected on the pitch.

"When Ryan Fraser is on the wing, he knows where Callum Wilson moves and when Callum comes into pockets, he knows Ryan will eventually come closer and move into the space based on his position. They have a lovely connection.

"They are different characters but they have a very good partnership off the field as well. Callum is more of a leader with his experience and Ryan is a different character but a very good one as well. He's more introverted - he doesn't speak much - but hard work says everything. Off the pitch, they make a good couple as well."
