These were the skies above Manchester this morning on the airport's busiest day in history

Take a glimpse at the skies above Manchester today on the airport's busiest day in history.

This incredible footage shows all of the flights departing and arriving at Manchester Airport between 5am and 9.30am on Friday.

Airport bosses were expecting today to be the busiest day in the airport's 81-year-old history .

It was estimated that around 115,000 passengers would arrive and depart from the UK's third largest airport over a period of 24 hours.

Cars were seen queuing to park up at Terminal One as groups of passengers made their way into the departure building.

In total, over the traditionally busy Bank Holiday weekend, an estimated 430,000 passengers are expected to travel through the airport.

July 26 was the busiest day of the year so far in terms of departures, with an estimated 56,653 passengers jetting off into the sun.

The busiest day in terms of arrivals is expected to be Friday, August 30, with 57,825 passengers due to jet in as the summer holidays draw to a close and schools start again.

But bosses said today would be the busiest day in total, with expansion over the years set to make it a record breaker.

Brad Miller, COO for Manchester Airport, said teams are working hard to keep things 'moving smoothly' over the busy period.

He added: “We’ve been delighted to welcome tens of thousands of passengers through the airport this morning already and, as always, our focus has been keeping everyone safe and secure, while delivering the best possible service.

“Our team has helped a wide range of customers, travelling for a variety of reasons, whether that be a special occasion, short break or businesses trip, and to destinations across the world.

“It is also one of the busiest weekends of the year for Manchester, with a series of sporting fixtures and the Pride festival and it has been our pleasure to welcome visitors from all corners of the globe to our city.

“Our teams are working hard with partners across the site to keep things moving smoothly for the rest of the weekend with another three busy days ahead.

"We’d advise all passengers travelling through over the weekend to ensure they’re prepared for when they arrive at the airport.  Whether flying from or into the airport, we wish everyone a great trip.”

A spokesperson from NATS, a provider of air traffic control services, said today was like a 'normal day' for them.

They said: "Today was the busiest day in terms of passengers at the airport.

"For us, it is the same as any other normal day."

Manchester Airport is the largest airport outside London with over 210 destinations served by 70 airlines.
