These were the queues at a McDonald's drive-thru which reopened in Bury this morning

These were the queues outside a McDonald's drive-thru which reopened in Bury on Wednesday.

The drive-thru at Woodfields Retail Park was one of of the dozens across the UK which reopened to customers this morning.

McDonald's has said it will be releasing the locations of the reopening restaurants on the morning of each day to manage anticipated demand.

However shortly after the branch in Bury had reopened, queues were already so long that they began to block the main road.

And according to eyewitnesses staff had to close the drive-thru temporarily to clear the gridlock.

One witness told the Manchester Evening News: "The queues just got that busy and it started to block the main road so they just temporarily closed the drive-thru for 20 minutes.

"People are now starting to pack up in the Tesco car park waiting for it to reopen."

The fast-food giant announced that four outlets in Bury would reopen today, including branches at Woodfields Retail Park, Pilsworth, Radcliffe and Whitefield.

The branch at The Rock will remain closed for now.

Customers will only be able to choose from a limited menu of items, with just one order per car and purchases limited to £25.

Other neighbouring branches that reopened yesterday were also met with huge queues.

Hundreds of drivers in Bolton lined up in the baking heat on Tuesday at the Astley Bridge store - with reports of waits of up to an hour-and-a-half for fans waiting to get their first Big Mac in months.

Again, surrounding streets were consumed with cars as McDonald's staff in high-vis jackets were seen directing drivers outside the restaurant in Waters Meeting Road.

It is more than two months since McDonald's decided to completely shut all of its UK restaurants as the coronavirus outbreak worsened.

Slowly, branches across the country are beginning to start trading again.

In May, the chain announced that it would be reopening 15 restaurants for delivery only.

Yesterday, 68 of McDonald's UK branches reopened, including four in Bolton.

Customers are now believed to be filling up the nearby Tesco car park while they wait for the drive-thru to reopen, say witnesses (JR Media Group)

Along with the four restaurants in Bury that are back in action today, four drive-thrus in Salford have also reopened - including the Bolton Road takeaway in Pendlebury, the Bury New Road store in Salford, the West One Retail Park location in Eccles and the Ellesmere Centre's takeaway in Walkden.

By Thursday all 924 drive-thrus in the UK are set to reopen in line with government guidelines and with strict social distancing measures in place.

Announcing the changes, McDonald's said: "This is only possible following the hard work of the teams in our 44 pilot restaurants.

"Over the last fortnight, our employees, franchisees and suppliers have worked tirelessly to implement new procedures to enable safe working so that we can now help all parts of the UK and Ireland to enjoy the return of the Big Mac."
