These were Britain's beaches today as UK basks in 36C temperatures

Britain's beaches were busy today as the UK basked in 36C sunshine.

Public Health England issued a hot weather warning as the sweltering temperatures saw Friday (August 7) become the hottest August day in 17 years, according to the Met Office.

Sunseekers were urged to take caution, both due to the extreme conditions and the risks of not maintaining coronavirus restrictions.

Hundreds of people descended to the coast across the country as early as 9am and as expected, crowds began to grow throughout the day.

This lead to people being warned to avoid tourist hotspots in Borunemouth as the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council's said safe social distancing is not possible.

HM Coastguard said around 70 callouts had been made across the UK by midday on Friday, which is "above average for this time of year".

The Coastguard reported its busiest day for more than four years as it dealt with 329 incidents on July 31, when the UK recorded the hottest day of the year and the third warmest on record at 37.8C.

Matt Leat, head of infrastructure and technology lead at HM Coastguard, said: "The coast is very busy today and that’s grown across the morning and will continue to grow as the day goes on.

"Looking back to last Friday (July 31), we are going to hit that many number of call-outs potentially today and this weekend."

Brighton also saw busy scenes with warnings to beach-goers that coronavirus restrictions are affecting lifeguarding so to take extra care in the water.
