These volunteers are paying for life-changing tattoos to help people cover up their self harm scars

People in Leeds who want to cover up their self-harm scars and move on from a troubled past may soon be able to get the cost covered by a new group of volunteers.

Scar Cover Up Freedom Fund (SCUFF) is a West Yorkshire-based group founded by Jess, who got a new lease of life when impressive ink-based artwork was used to cover up scars on both arms.

Jess King, who was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder after battling mental health problems for around 15 years, set up the fund to help cash-strapped individuals who want to cover their own self-harm scars.

There are now over 100 people on the waiting list for a SCUFF funded tattoo.

A SCUFF spokeswoman said: "These tattoos can help people move on from the constant reminder of their past, is part of the healing process and can give people confidence to do more with their life.

'These tattoos are truly life changing'

"We have freedom in our name, because this is what these tattoos offer our applicants - freedom from the past, from the stigma, from judgement. These tattoos are truly life changing.

"We now have a huge waiting list of people, desperate for funding, and we are slowly building up supporters to our cause."

She added: "Although we have an amazing group of supporters, our waiting list just keeps growing. We are unregistered as a charity as we do not have the income to register with the charity's commission yet."

Jess and the team are now trying to raise money to pay for all of this life-changing artwork and generate an annual income of at least £5,000 so they can register as a charity.

She is currently on a 127-mile hike along the Leeds Liverpool Canal, in a bid to raise much-needed funds for SCUFF.
