'These things are lethal' - Edinburgh police tow electric scooter in Leith amid clamp down

Police have been clamping down on electric scooter riders in Edinburgh this week, with one even towed away.

Officers from the Road Policing Division say that one rider was stopped on Great Junction Street and had their scooter seized.

Elsewhere, another e-scooter rider was pulled over near Lothian Road, on Semple Street, for "riding on a footpath".

A statement from officers read: "Two e-scooter riders reported to the Procurator Fiscal by Edinburgh Road Police.

"One stopped on Great Junction Street for riding on the roadway, has been reported for no insurance & scooter was seized.

"Another stopped on Semple Street for riding on a footpath and having no insurance."

There was mixed reactions from locals, with some insisting police time would be better spent elsewhere.

One person blasted: "I’ve been driving round Edinburgh all day and the vehicles over two tonnes are being driven over the speed limit everywhere all the time if you’re interested.

"Loads been driven and parked on pavements too. Good to see priorities are right."

Another said: "Great example of Polis Scotland drive to be carbon neutral....electric vehicle seized and a 20kg scooter uplifted by a heavy diesel HGV.

"Who comes up with these processes?"

However, others were glad to see officers cracking down on e-scooters in the city.

One person added: "This is great to see. Hate people who ride these on pavements with no regard to safety. Work it right up em."

"These things are lethal. I hope they never become legal", commented another.

Under current UK laws, you can buy an e-scooter but are now allowed to ride it on a public road, cycle lane or pavement. It must only be used on private land, with the permission of the landowner.

Electric scooters are also subject to MOT, tax and licensing as they are classified as a Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs).
