These roads will be closed this week as Newcastle hosts European rugby finals weekend

If you're planning to visit Newcastle city centre this week then be aware that it's going to busy in town due to a big event at St James' Park.

Newcastle city council expects tens of thousands of rugby fans to visit the city from Thursday and through the weekend, as St James' Park is hosting the sport's European finals.

Leinster take on Saracens in the Heineken Cup Final on Saturday, May 11, with  ASM Clermont Auvergne and La Rochelle contesting the Challenge Cup final on Friday night.

Newcastle City Council says roads will be shut in the city centre and Quayside to accommodate fanzones and supporters. Some are shut from Wednesday until Monday.

St James' Park area

  • From 10am on Friday May 10 until approximately midnight on Saturday May 11 the following roads will be closed: Back St James Street, Leazes Terrace, Strawberry Place (between Barrack Road and St James’ Street), Terrace Place (between Leazes Terrace and St James’ Street) and Strawberry Lane at is junction with Strawberry Place.The following roads will be closed from approximately 1 hour after the start of each match until 30 minutes after each match finishes: St James’ Street, Strawberry Lane, St Andrews Street, Leazes Park Road, Strawberry Place (between St James’ Street and Leazes Park Road) and Terrace Place (between St James’ Street and Leazes Terrace eastern leg).

Blackett Street area

  • Blackett Street and Newgate Street to be closed from 6am on Thursday 9 May until midnight on Saturday 11 May

Quayside area

(Newcastle Chronicle)
  • From 10am on Wednesday 8th until 6am on Monday 13th May: Quayside closed to traffic (Sandhill, Quayside B1600 to junction with Milk Market, Hadrian’s Wall Path, Lombard Street, King Street, Broad Street.)
  • 10:00pm to 11:30pm Saturday May 11: Side (between Dean Street and Queen Street)
