These girls were spotted throwing glass bottles... so were taught a lesson

A group of young women were caught by officers in an unmarked police car as they threw glass bottles and gas cannisters on the street.

The incident took place in Hulme on Friday evening (August 14) according to officers who posted details on the Moss Side and Hulme Twitter page.

“Girls caught by unmarked police car throwing glass bottles & lots of gas bottles on the floor,” the post stated.

In a bit of old-fashioned schooling, the officers decided to teach the litterers a lesson by making them clean it up in order to avoid receiving a fine.

“All red faced & cleaning up in #Hulme to avoid a fine after upsetting local residents on Friday night,” the Twitter post added.

“Please respect your #Manchester, take it home or find a bin.”

The spotlight has been shone on Manchester's litter problem recently as part of our Don’t Trash Our Future campaign.

A survey conducted by InYourArea.co.uk found that more than 7,500 respondents overwhelmingly thought littering was having a negative effect on their neighbourhoods.

55% of survey respondents in Manchester said litter made them angry while 49% agreed it was a big problem in their area.

John Read, founder of Clean Up Britain, said the campaign had stemmed from a ‘huge desire’ to try and solve the UK’s litter epidemic.

“Littering is symptomatic of a lack of pride in our local communities, and a lack of respect for other people and the environment generally,” he said.

“This campaign is about challenging and reversing these negative sentiments, and saying enough is enough.”
