These General Election maps show the massive divide between younger and older voters

The General Election may seem like a lifetime ago now but experts will be poring over the results for some time yet.

The snap vote took place on Thursday December 12 and by the early hours of December 13, we knew that Boris Johnson had kept his place as Prime Minister and in the end the Conservative Party won by a majority of 80.

The Tories managed to turn previous Labour strongholds Blue, including seats in Bury and Bolton.

But these maps released on Twitter account Election Maps UK show the stark difference in political preference depending on your age group.

The account has compiled how different age groups, from 18 to 24s to the over 65s, voted in the General Election.

And whilst Labour suffered a catastrophic defeat, earning just 203 seats, the data shows that the party would have won a huge 544 seats if it was just down to those aged 18 to 24  to cast their vote.

This would have seen the Conservatives take just four.

In Scotland, the Scottish National Party would have turned almost completely yellow with 58 of 59 seats.

However, in complete contrast, the votes cast by those over the age of 65 cast a completely different picture.

Based on this age group, the Conservative party would have won 575 seats and Labour would have taken only 32.

And if the vote only relied on those aged 25 to 49, we would have had a hung parliament with Labour falling shy of the 326 seats needed to gain full control.

Instead, they would have had 310, Conservative would have had 240, SNP 56 and the Liberal Democrats 21.
