These game day hosting essentials guarantee a crowd-pleasing and stress-free party

As the summer winds down, football season provides the perfect excuse for a hosting switch-up, from classic summer gatherings to fun and relaxed game-day get-togethers.

And while I can't wait to try some fall table decor ideas for my chic, seasonal dinner parties, right now it's all about stocking up on some game day hosting essentials. From tailgate parties to open houses for friends and family to catch the game together, there are plenty of opportunities to host a fun, casual event.

The sports might be the main event, but I'd argue that any game day party is nothing without the refreshments, so suitable crockery and serveware is a must. And if you're still making the most of the late summer weather or thinking about a tailgate party, you'll want to make sure your barbecue essentials and outdoor safe tableware are ready to go.

For at-home hosting, why not bring some of your pool party ideas inside, focusing on comfy seating, buffet-style snacks and your best bar cart ideas.

'I'm a born and raised New York sports fan, so we take game days pretty seriously in my household,' says Devin Toolen, our style editor. 'When my family hosts a watch party at our house, we always make sure to have ample seating for everyone, table space for game day food, and some outdoor game ideas to keep everyone entertained during commercial breaks.'

Keeping the drinks flowing is, of course, a key game day essential, you'll want to be prepared: if you're hosting a gathering, think about bringing those home bar ideas to life to really perfect your home bar setup.

'Game days are long, so plan your food and drinks accordingly,' adds style editor Julia Demer. 'A cooler that's roomy enough to hydrate more than just yourself is non-negotiable, but it’s a bonus if it’s actually nice to look at (because it will be sitting in your eyeline all day).'

If you're on the go, come armed with a cooler, such as the Ninja FrostVault, and plenty of ice. Or lean into the retro look. 'I’ve always loved retro coolers – they ooze nostalgic, Americana charm,' says Julia. 'My parents still use their old Coleman (30 years and counting), but brands like Business & Pleasure are adding a little resort-style polish that I can’t resist.'
