These Final Hours review – apocalypse with aplomb

‘Compelling bleakness’: Angourie Rice as Rose and Nathan Phillips as James. Photograph: David Dare Parker

There are just a few hours left until the end of the world. And this film asks you to spend them in the company of James (Nathan Phillips), a self-obsessed Australian whose muscles are more defined than his personality. Although the film lacks the bravura of Von Trier’s Melancholia or the heart and humour of Don McKellar’s Last Night, it does have a propulsive energy and a satisfying arc of redemption. The backdrop – the total collapse of society in the face of imminent annihilation – is evoked with a compelling bleakness.
