These are the roads that will be gritted as Bristol set for snow

Temperatures in the South West have dropped significantly in recent days - with the Met Office predicting snow in Bristol as early as tonight (December 3).

Motorists should be prepared for driving in wintry conditions, and may want to plan a route using roads that are prioritised for gritting.

All the roads that will be gritted in the city this winter can be found on the council’s interactive gritting routes map, which gives a precise location of the areas that will be covered.

Some roads include Stoke Lane, Eastfield Road and Canford Lane.

The council maintains all public roads in Bristol, which includes gritting and making sure salt stores are well stocked.

From October to April the council’s Winter Service Team use weather forecasts and road conditions to decide if any gritting or snow clearance is needed.

They use rock salt to grit roads to stop ice and snow settling, and also use it to clear ice and snow.

They grit major roads and roads around hospitals and emergency services first.

The council uses a snow plough to clear roads if the snow is more than 5cm deep, and if a road is unsafe because of ice or snow it can be closed.

There are also 750 grit bins located around Bristol which the public have access to.

The council don’t grit pavements before ice or snow has settled, however will clear some pavements during snowfall that lasts more than three or four days, starting with pavements around care homes, health centres, schools and hospitals.
