These are the latest coronavirus infection rates for Greater Manchester as Salford enters red alert

Salford has entered coronavirus red alert after the number of new infections in the city increased.

The latest official data reveals that the borough's infection rate currently stands at 51.4 per 100,000 people.

The government puts any borough in the country on red alert - the highest level in place - when the rate goes above 50.

Salford is now the third Greater Manchester borough to enter red alert along with Oldham and Bolton.

The ward of Eccles appears to be the borough's hotspot, with 15 cases recorded there between August 26 and September 1.

The number of cases has increased in several areas of Greater Manchester in the week up to September 2.

In Bolton, where cases have spiked massively in the last week, the infection rate now stands at 104.3 per 100,000 people.

It means the borough has had the highest number of cases per 100,000 people in the whole country for the third day running.

The latest figures put Bolton at nearly double the government threshold for a 'red alert'.

Tighter restrictions have now been brought in across the borough in a bid to stem the spread of the virus.

Rochdale and Tameside have also seen notable upward trends in the number of cases, leaving both boroughs in danger of entering red alert in the coming days.

Rochdale's current rate is 49.5, while Tameside's has gradually increased in recent days and currently stands at 49.

Oldham remains in red alert, although its cases have dipped slightly from the previous seven-day period.

Cases have also increased in Bury, with the current rate now at 38.2.

Meanwhile, infection rates in Manchester and Trafford appear to be plateauing, with the rates remaining fairly consistent in recent days.

The one borough in Greater Manchester has a lower infection rate than the national average -Wigan.

The borough has the lowest infection rate in Greater Manchester, at 13.6 cases per 100,000 people.

Although Wigan's rate remains low, it has increased to 17.6.

It means the borough's number of infections is now slightly above the national average.

The average rate in England is currently 16 per 100,000 people.

Rates are calculated up to three days ago because of the delay in reporting cases.
