Travelling, for many, is one of life's greatest joys. Experiencing new cultures, meeting new people and witnessing natural wonders around the world is arguably what life is all about.

Undoubtedly, however, some countries are safer to visit than others - something which global risk experts International SOS have just demonstrated through the unveiling of their 2019 Travel Risk Map.

Made in collaboration with Control Risks, the global diagram shows the travel risk level of each country in the world, using a scale ranging from ‘insignificant’ to ‘extreme’.

Countries such as Norway, Iceland, Finland, Greenland and Luxembourg have all been deemed to hold an ‘insignificant travel risk', making them the safest countries in the world to visit.

Whereas countries that have been classified in the 'extreme travel risk' category include parts of Libya, Central African Republic, Ukraine, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Most of Europe, Australasia and North America were considered to be in the ‘low travel risk’ spectrum, as were countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, Oman, Iran, Uzbekistan, Botswana and parts of South America, like Ecuador and Paraguay.

Countries with a 'high travel risk' included parts of Mexico, India and the Middle East, as well as Venezuela and central Africa.

Index: Green - insignificant, Yellow - low risk, Orange - medium risk, Red - high risk, Deep Red - extreme risk (International SOS and Control Risks)

The factors taken into consideration when creating the map include political violence and social unrest, as well as the sturdiness of transport infrastructure, effectiveness of emergency and security services, susceptibility to natural disasters and the state of industrial relations.

You can find the complete list of 'extreme travel risk' countries below:

  • Parts of Ukraine
  • Parts of Egypt
  • Somalia
  • The Gaza Strip
  • South Sudan
  • Central African Republic
  • Mali
  • Libya
  • Afghanistan
  • Yemen
  • Iraq
  • Syria
  • Eastern Nigeria
